I inadvertantly subscribed to feeds using a Microsoft feed reader. It seemed to happen automatically once I clicked on the orange RSS icon. I then had to go back and re-subscribe using Google Reader. Google allows you to export/import subscriptions from one feed reader to another in a standard format called OPML, but because Microsoft feed reader is a non-Google application, I couldn't work out how to do it.
The Australian Podcasting Directory site is temporarily unavailable so I subscribed to an ABC podcast - triple j: Sunday night Safran . I've been a fan of John Safran since his debut on ABC TV's 'Race Around the World.' We see a continuation of Safran's unlikely, yet ingenious partnership with Fr Bob McGuire, which began with 'John Safran vs God.'
When I view YouTube clips, the footage freezes every few seconds and I was afraid I might experience the same problem when listening to podcasts. I was pleased to find the sound crisp and unbroken. The process of subscribing to a podcast proved to be very straightforward. I'm still not quite sure how to download podcasts onto an MP3 player. I have a 2GB Ipod shuffle. Can it be used to download podcasts?
RSS and podcasts are undoubtedly invaluable information sources, but I've only really explored them because it's part of the assignment. From a professional point of view I think it's essential to know what they are and how to access them, but I don't know how often I would seek them out outside the work context. I'm the kind of girl who likes the experience of reading and handling an actual broadsheet newspaper. As a future information professional, access to a PC is a given. I could see myself working in RSS as part of the daily routine once I arrive at work or during downtime.

Hello Sarah - yes you can download podcasts to you computer and then add them to your shuffle.
I need to resetup my ipod touch now that i have a new pc.
I downloaded podcasts of Mandarin lessons before we went to china.
A belated thanks for the warning about the MS feed reader, Sara - that definitely would've been a problem.
Sorry for the no-show last week - it's all on my blog *sigh*...

Hi Sarah - I've been downloading podcasts for years, in fact I listen to them almost exclusively these days. Do you have iTunes? When you subscribe, iTunes should open and they should appear under Podcasts in the Library at the top left-hand corner; when you click on this you should be able to see the list of shows available in the main screen. Click on the 'Get' button for each one you want to download.
Once you've connected your iPod to the computer you should be able to just drag them over onto its listing in 'Devices', and they'll load up!
One thing I've noticed with various MP3 players that seems not to be a problem with iPods: if the format is not MP3, they'll not be able to be played until they've been converted to MP3 in the 'Advanced' menu - and then they'll be listed in the Music library, rather than under Podcasts.
I imagine you've probably figured all this out by now - wanted to mention this just in case.
